Open-air Shakespeare festival comes to Oxford Castle Quarter this summer

Oxford Castle and Prison Shakespeare

The romantic, historical surroundings of Oxford Castle Quarter will bring the words of the Bard to life this summer – as it provides the backdrop for an eight-week Shakespeare Festival run.

Actors from three of Oxford’s most talented theatre companies will grace the stage within the sheltered castleyard at Oxford Castle and Prison, with their versions of Shakespeare’s most famous plays.

From the romance and tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, the life and trials of Richard III (both running from 17th – 29th June and produced by BMH Theatre), the conflict of Macbeth (produced by Tomahawk Theatre and running from 1st July – 27th July) to the seafaring Twelfth Night (29th July – 10th August, production by Siege Theatre), the vibrant adaptations will make Shakespeare accessible to all ages.  The live music, puppetry, and dancing will keep audiences transfixed.  The season runs from Monday 17th June through to Saturday 10th August.

Oxford Castle Quarter is the city’s unique, historic site, home to the 1,000 year old Oxford Castle and Prison, which offers year round attractions to suit everyone.

Ideally situated within a short walk of the main shopping street, Oxford Castle Quarter offers an eclectic mix of bars and restaurants; from the sophisticated 1885 and Malmaison bistro, to the convivial Pizza Express and Prezzo and the traditional Slug & Lettuce or Swan and Castle. The very unique Malmaison Hotel is situated in the heart of Oxford Castle Quarter. Set within the old converted prison, the Malmaison Hotel is today a distinctive hotel with stylish rooms and a roof top terrace and bar.

Pre-bookable picnic hampers are also available to purchase. With prices starting from £8.95, hampers include a range of goodies or, for an extra treat, splash out on a Sparking Picnic and enjoy the performances with a bottle of bubbles.
